Crisis Relief extended – help us reach another 400 families.
Earlier this year, we launched an appeal to reach 800 vulnerable families so that we can ensure their food security during the unprecedented economic crisis that the country faces. As the crisis continues to unfold, we are extending this appeal to reach an additional 400 families.
Work has begun for the 800 families that have already been funded through the first phase of this appeal. You can read more about that here.
While food packages provide short term relief, given the difficulty in accessing diverse nutritious food over the coming months, our approach is to provide home gardens that will provide a more sustainable solution for the most vulnerable. As the country enters into the dry season, we will be working closely with families to utilise wastewater techniques so they can grow enough food for their families during these tough months ahead.
$50 can change everything for a family
With the country in crisis, we need your support to work with an additional 400 of the most vulnerable families to ensure that they can continue to access food in the midst of rising food prices. 800 families have already been funded in the first phase of this appeal.
The situation will get worse before it gets better. During this time, we must ensure that the most vulnerable – children, elderly, women-headed households and the food insecure can continue to access nutritious food.
We will respond by providing the most vulnerable with home gardens – including training and the critical inputs to grow enough food to meet the needs of their families.
Relief, while much needed, will be one-off while home gardens will provide a more sustainable solution for families to get through the tough times ahead.
Sri Lanka is in Crisis
Food, fuel, power, water and medicine are in short supply. Emergency rule has been declared. The country is on the verge of bankruptcy. The greatest victims are always those that have the least.
The cost of basic goods are skyrocketing in Sri Lanka right now. Riots, curfews and military presence have returned. We work with some of the most vulnerable families in the country and now their basic needs and safety is further at risk.
The cause – “30% is misfortune. 70% is mismanagement,” said Murtaza Jafferjee, chair of Colombo-based think tank Advocata Institute.
We need your support to respond to those in need. We cannot wait for a government solution or international relief efforts; we must act now.
Help us reach an additional 400 families with your support (a total of 1,200 families including our first phase of crisis funding).
For just $50, we can support those whose basic needs are at risk. With home gardens, families will be able to feed themselves and share what remains with their community. Families will be set up for long-term food security.
To ensure vulnerable families can feed themselves through any crisis, we will be accelerating our Home Garden program for an additional 400 families (1,200 families in total when combined with our phase 1 crisis funding).
For just $50 we will be able to identify vulnerable families who will most benefit from the support of:
- Seeds and other materials to establish the right vegetables for the land and water available
- Home gardening training, including use of wastewater
- Mentoring and additional training for 6 months
- Monitoring and support for 12 months
As with all of Palmera’s work, this isn’t just a handout. We will be working with families on an ongoing basis. With the dry season ahead, families without wells will be trained in waste water and other innovative techniques. Through our Women Banks, we have a collective set up for bartering excess vegetables so that no one is left out in the community.
