Vaalvosai is a school for the hearing impaired based in Batticaloa in the East of Sri Lanka. The school has been supported by YMCA and in service since 1999. It is the only school in the district supporting the hearing impaired. The programs run through YMCA aim to build healthy bodies, minds, and spirits of youth and their families and communities that support them.
Initially the school started with 3 teachers and 12 children but to this current day has grown to 10 teachers, 5 additional staff and 44 students.
The school provides primary education up until Year 10, with preferred vocational training based upon interests and abilities offered upon the completion of Grade 8. From there the school runs a transition program that leads to job placement upon graduation.
So far this has achieved more than 150 graduates working in the government and private sectors alongside entrepreneurs.
For students who are not able to stay at home boarding is provided which enables students to develop their social skills and independent living skills.
For students who are not able to travel to school due to distances there are also transportation services provided.
The school provides education for children from all ethical and religious backgrounds and they are united by one language… sign language!
However, the funding provided for the school by CBM has unfortunately phased out and alongside the Covid-19 pandemic and economic crisis parts of the program have been downscaled and financial constraints of the organisation have increased. Thankfully they have remained operational due to support from YMCA’s other youth programs.
Despite this, the school is in need of donors to ensure the continuation of quality education and to sustain the school’s activities to the best capacity possible.
Let’s stand together to break their silence. If we don’t support them their voices may cease to be heard!
