Sureshika lives in a temporary shed with a tin roof that doesn’t provide much shelter. She calls this her home. It was pieced together by relatives and neighbours, on a plot of land the family managed to secure.

It was never meant to last, but this is where she brings up her child.

She cooks outside. And when it rains, she still cooks in the rain.

They sit outside most of the time too because there is barely any space to live in. And even when they want to use the toilet, they go outside to a shed, away from the home.

Sureshika is twenty-two and this has been her life for many years. Her husband takes what daily-wage work he can find, to make enough money for them to live. Their one-and-a-half-year-old son has epilepsy. So they use up almost all the money he earns to treat their son.

Yet Sureshika manages all of this and their food, on whatever income he brings home, to a hut that offers no real stability to begin with.

Having an actual house will help the family stand on steadier ground. Sureshika says it will help her stop worrying about the rain and the heat everyday, and focus on getting her son the help he needs.
