Shyamali’s house is small and it’s falling apart. You can barely call it a home. It’s not really fit to live in anymore. But that’s where they all live; her mother, her child, her brother and Shyamali herself. It’s where she cares for her young daughter, her elderly mother, and her unmarried brother, both of whom are unwell.

Getting here took everything she had. Unable to bear the pain of being abandoned by her husband, Shyamali set herself on fire a few years ago. She just couldn’t bear the emotional pain of him leaving. But this made things so much worse for her.

The act left her severely disfigured. She had no income, and for a long time, no real connection to the people around her either. Because of the way she was seen, finding work, or even to approach someone for help was difficult.

But Shyamali kept going, for her daughter and her family. Her resilience still makes her believe that a better life is possible for her child.

She looks forward to the day when the family she looks after so lovingly will have a steady roof over their heads. And a place that would give them stability and strength.
