Nethmi stands in front of the shed she calls a home with her three children, who are all growing up without a proper house.

As a mother, she says her heart is burdened to see them grow up without anywhere to sleep or eat properly.

This is never what she imagined for her kids. Especially for her daughters who are getting older now, and will need to be protected somewhere secure and safe.

Years ago, a cobra bit her husband. What followed was nerve damage that’s left him weak and unsteady on his feet. So heavy work is out of the question now. Doctors have recommended surgery, but it hasn’t happened. The right facilities aren’t nearby, and the risks involved are a real worry for the family.

So it falls to Nethmi to support her family. She grows green leafy vegetables on their land, and that’s what the household runs on. That means there is nothing left for patching up a house that is already crumbling.

And with three children still in school and her husband’s medical costs on top, there’s rarely room to think of building.

But Nethmi is determined to see her children have a better life, with proper shelter and a real home. Somewhere they can study and feel safe in.

This is what she looks forward to the most when we ask her about her future. And with your help and support, this is something we can offer a mother who longs for a better future for her children.
