Family Supported – Vanuya (Killinochi)

When we first met Vanuya, it was clear she was carrying the heavy weight of her family’s struggles on her own. A devoted mother of two school-aged children, her greatest wish was simple—to give them a chance at education and a brighter future. But life at home was far from easy. Her husband, a laborer, could only manage to work a couple of days each week, and much of his limited earnings were lost to alcohol. This left Vanuya not only without financial stability, but also facing the emotional toll of constant problems at home. The stress and hardship inevitably spilled over into her children’s education, making it even harder for them to stay focused on their studies.

Each day, Vanuya battles to stretch what little they have. Their basic needs and livelihood are mostly covered by welfare payments, but these are never enough to meet all the expenses of food, school, and household needs. Despite these challenges, she remains determined—fighting through daily struggles so her children can continue studying and hold on to the hope of a better tomorrow. Meeting her, we saw not just a woman in need, but a mother’s unshakable love, quiet strength, and courage to stand firm for her children against all odds.

We’ve captured their voice so you can hear their story.

How is your family’s situation now?

Before, my husband was a daily wage earner. I took care of the little children with him, which was a real hardship; the children were going to school. We did not have money for their education expenses. At that time, we ate only twice a day. Then, after Palmera supported us with the dairy business, we began selling milk and earning a small income every month. When we get this monthly income, we can also cover the children’s education expenses. It seems that the little children can eat properly with the milk. The family situation is a little better because of this dairy business.

Do you feel that there has been any improvement in your family after this?

Yes, before receiving the dairy business, I had to rely on my husband’s income no matter what the cost. After the dairy business, I did not have to depend on my husband for the children’s tuition, our food, or other expenses. So, I feel I have gained some respect in society and among my husband’s relatives.

(Palmera established a village bank in our community to develop financial literacy—a place where we could save and access loans to reduce our debt from predatory lenders).

Have you joined Palmera’s Village Saving Group?

Yes, we have joined. If I tell you about the happiness that this village savings group has given us—now when everyone has a birthday, a celebration, or even a sad event, some people do not have money immediately. In our savings group, even if we don’t have a big celebration, when we cut a small cake, it brings great happiness and a new feeling for everyone.

What is your future goal?

My goal is to have a calf from this cow, increase the number of cows, and with the income from this dairy business, I can meet my family’s needs.

The people who helped you with this for the progress of your family are the Ajantha Mohanadasan family.

We are very grateful to those who helped us. thank you.
