You Backed them and things began to change

Family Supported - Tharshika (Batticaloa)

“An elephant attacked our home. It destroyed the kitchen and damaged the house. The roof leaks when it rains. It’s difficult to keep a toddler safe.”

Tharsika lives in Kadpanikulam in Sri Lanka’s East with her husband and their little daughter who is one and a half. Her husband does daily wage work, and she stays home to take care of the child because if she goes out, the baby is alone.

Tharsika says it’s difficult because her husband can only work when there is something available. Some days there is no work, and then they struggle. Even now, what they get is barely enough. They can’t afford the things they need for the house.

Most days, they can just buy food. Sometimes even that is hard. When they don’t have enough, Tharsika goes to shops and buys things on credit. If one shop will not give them, she goes to another. This is how they manage, day by day.

They took a loan to fix their incomplete house and build a kitchen, but the house was not built very strong. An elephant came and damaged it badly. Now the rain makes the roof leak and the bamboo walls in the kitchen get ruined. They are trying to repair it again, but they don’t have the money for it right now.

When she talks about the future, Tharsika says that she wants her daughter to study well and get a job she likes. She also wants a home that is complete and safe for her. She wants her daughter to have choices while staying close to the family. She also talks about having a cabinet with cups and glasses all set inside.  Simple dreams that seem difficult for now.

But, even with all these struggles, they keep going. They work hard, try to save whenever they can, and do what they need to do every day to have food on the table and keep their home together. They look forward to fixing their house and want to give their daughter a chance to learn and grow.
