You Backed them and things began to change
Sukenthini and her husband can’t speak, so they can’t always find work to pay for food.
Sukenthini is 29. She lives with her husband, who cannot speak, and their two children, a girl who is eight and a boy who is four. Her mother, Mallikadevi, also lives with them.
Sukenthini doesn’t get regular work. But everyday, she looks after the children, cooks, and helps her husband when he goes to find daily wage work. He has trouble walking too and cannot do heavy work, so sometimes he earns a little from cutting firewood or helping at the cremation ground. Work doesn’t come every week, so most of the time they just manage.
For food, they make it last as best they can. When there is a good harvest, they get vegetables. Mallikadevi buys flour and eggs when she can. If there is not enough food, they survive on plain rice. It’s hard because both parents cannot speak and must find ways to ask for work or help.
Their house does not have a toilet. They fetch water from the well every day for necessities. It takes time and effort, but they do it. Even though they cannot speak, Sukenthini and her husband work hard, manage what little money they earn, and make sure their children have food and education.
Sukenthini thinks a lot about her children’s future. She wants her daughter to study well in school. She also hopes to build a proper house one day. Even though Sukenthini cannot talk, she helps her children with learning and encourages their education.
Education is very important to Sukenthini and she wants both kids to have a chance to study and have better opportunities than she had.
