You Backed them and things began to change

Family Supported - Sukappiriya (Mullathivu)

Selva Senthuran
Donor

When we met Sukappiriya, she was standing quietly outside her fragile, unfinished home, her eyes carrying a weight no one should have to bear. The walls offered little protection, no proper doors, no toilet, just a shelter barely keeping her family safe from the world outside.

Her husband had once worked as a carpenter, but a fall in 2015 left him unable to do heavy work. Now, he works only when he can, earning just enough to keep a few meals on the table. Most days, it’s her children’s school lunches that fill their empty stomachs.

As she spoke, her hands trembled slightly—not from weakness, but from the constant worry that she carries silently every day. Yet, in her eyes, there was a spark of hope. She showed us her tiny garden and shared her dream of having just a few tools—a motor, a pipe, a sprayer—so she could grow more, provide more, and slowly rebuild her home and life.

That day, we didn’t just meet a mother struggling to survive; we met courage, resilience, and a love so deep that it refuses to give up, no matter how heavy life becomes.

We’ve captured their voice so you can hear their story.

Palmera has supported us in starting goat farming, poultry farming, peanut cultivation, and other fruit and vegetable cultivation initiatives. Thanks to this, we are now living a very happy life, and our business is progressing steadily. We express our heartfelt gratitude to Palmera, and we sincerely wish for Palmera’s continued growth and success.

We are very happy since Palmera came into our lives. We have made significant progress. After we resettled here, we didn’t know about agriculture, but Palmera has guided us and helped us improve. Now, we are moving forward with success. We express our heartfelt gratitude to Palmera for their support.

(Palmera established a village bank in our community to develop financial literacy—a place where we could save and access loans to reduce our debt from predatory lenders).

Each week, I attend the Palmera’s village bank meetings. I make savings weekly there. If I need any loans, I will get them from the group and repay them monthly. After Palmera came, they provided peanut seeds for cultivation and very happy about that. We are raising goats and chickens and get eggs and giving them to children. After these improvements because of Palmera only

Through goat farming and fruit and vegetable cultivation, we have been able to earn a steady income. This is how I fulfill my household needs as a mother.

We would like to thank who has undertaken this project to increase this family’s income with financial assistance from the Selva Senthuran family in Australia.

We are deeply grateful to this family.
