Family Supported - Sasikala (Killinochi)

Vishala SriPathma
Donor

When we first met Sasikala and her family, it was clear they were living under constant struggle and uncertainty. Sasikala is a devoted mother of two children, both currently studying, who dreams of giving them a better future. Her husband works as a seasonal laborer, but much of what he earns is lost to alcohol before he returns home, leaving Sasikala to shoulder the burden of feeding and educating their children alone. This dependency trapped her in a cycle of hardship, with little hope of moving forward.

Despite these challenges, Sasikala has shown incredible resilience and determination. With the opportunity to run a home-based business, she now has a chance to earn a steady income, provide for her children’s needs, and work toward a secure and brighter future. Meeting her, it was impossible not to be moved by her courage and unwavering commitment to her children. Her story is a powerful reminder of how timely support can transform a family’s life and restore hope where it was once lost.

We’ve captured their voice so you can hear their story.

Sister, do you feel happy now?

Yes. I am very happy because I have got a livelihood. Earlier we lived in a very hard situation. My husband used to work for wages. Now we have been given a cow (by Palmera). That cow gave birth. We take milk from it and sell it. Our two children are going to school. The eldest daughter has completed her Advance levels examination. We meet the tuition expenses of the children with the income from milk.

Earlier I used to expect only the money that my husband brings when he goes to work. Now I don’t need to expect that. Because I get income from the livelihood I have now. So now I don’t expect much from my husband’s income. I am taking care of the school expenses of my children with this money. The cow gave birth. With the income from my dairy farming that I got from my livelihood, I bought another cow.

We are very happy now. We are very happy because we have money in our hands. We have two cows. With this income, we eat well every day. We do not buy milk powder, we get milk from our cows and drink it twice a day.

(Palmera established a village bank in our community to develop financial literacy—a place where we could save and access loans to reduce our debt from predatory lenders).

Have you joined the self-help group?

Yes, I have joined the Palmera village savings group. Since I go to groups, we meet every Sunday. At that time, we all happily talked and spent time together. If someone in the groups has a birthday, we celebrate.

My goal is that we should buy more cows through this cattle business and increase our income. My goal is that we should become wealthier.

The family who helped your family so that your family could live well are the Vishala SriPathma family. Do you want to say something to them?

We are very grateful to those who have helped us. My heartfelt thanks go to them. Every day when I pray, I ask God to bless all those who have supported us.
