When we first met Romia, we saw a woman carrying the weight of not just her own family, but also the children of her eldest daughter. At 43, she is the sole breadwinner for her three children, and after the tragic loss of her son-in-law, she has taken on the responsibility of raising her two grandchildren as well. Life is a constant struggle—her home has no electricity or toilet facilities, and most days, they go to bed hungry. Every small task, from preparing a meal to keeping her family safe, is a battle against scarcity and despair.
Despite these overwhelming challenges, Romia’s resilience shines through. She dreams of a life where her children and grandchildren can grow up healthy, educated, and safe, yet the path forward feels impossible without help. Meeting her, we could feel the weight of her exhaustion, the sleepless nights, and the burden of responsibility she carries alone. Her story is a testament to the quiet courage of mothers who endure unimaginable hardships, and a reminder that with timely support, the lives of families like hers can be transformed from survival to hope.
We’ve captured their voice so you can hear their story.
My name is John Nageshwari (Romia’s mother). I am 67 years old. Life has not been easy for me. I was extremely poor, and the only way I make a living is by finding labor work whenever I can. Earlier Some days, the work was there; other days, it wasn’t. But even in my struggle, I feel deeply grateful because Palmera stepped in to help me when I needed it most. They helped me do poultry and taught me how to take care of them properly. They showed me how to manage my life. And now, I am managing my life well.
I feel so much happiness and gratitude because of the help I’ve received. Me, my daughter Romiya, and my grandchildren and my great-grandchildren—I am taking care of them. And I thank my God for my healthy life. I believe God has given me the strength to carry on. May God bless and give a healthy life to everyone who supported us.
I received this assistance in the name of my daughter, Romia Jesmin. The Palmera team has been visiting us and taking care of us, and I am deeply grateful to Sir Gopi for being there from the very beginning and helping us. Thank you so much!
