You Backed them and things began to change
“After my husband’s leg injury, it’s hard for him to stand or walk for long hours during work.”
Ravitha is 27 and lives with her youngest child in rural Sri Lanka while her husband is away in Colombo working on a pipeline. When he was young, he fell and broke his leg, and now he has a metal plate in it. He can’t do hard work, and the money he earns from wage work is very little. He sends some money for food and groceries, and Ravitha does small cleaning jobs to help cover the rest.
Sometimes it is still not enough, and they have to borrow or go without things. She does her best to make sure her child has food and clothes every day, but it’s a constant struggle to manage everything with so little.
The house she lives in came from her mother with government support, but it has cracks, and repairs are slow because of money. Sometimes they sell something they grow at home or borrow small amounts to fix things at home or buy food. But Ravitha keeps the home in order, cleans, and tries to take care of everything around the house as best she can.
When she was growing up, her father left, and her mother raised her and her sisters with very little. They mostly ate millet and borrowed money just to have enough food. Now Ravitha tries to make things better for her own child. She brings her child to nursery and makes sure school needs are met.
Ravitha does all that she can for her family. She is determined to keep going every day, making sure her child is fed, in school, and cared for because she hopes for a safe and comfortable life for her little one. One that is different from her own.
