When we met Parimaladevi, her home felt heavy with the quiet weight of uncertainty and struggle. She depends on her husband’s income, but his work is seasonal and unpredictable, leaving the family unsure how they will manage from one month to the next. With three children currently studying, every day is a challenge to provide them with proper food, school supplies, and the support they need to learn and grow. Parimaladevi often sacrifices her own needs to make sure her children have enough to eat and the basics for their education.
Despite these hardships, a spark of hope shines in her eyes. She dreams of starting a small business that could bring stability and security to her family, ensuring a steady income and a chance for her children to thrive. She believes that with guidance and support, her family could overcome the uncertainty they live with, meet their daily needs, and create a brighter, more promising future. Her story is one of quiet courage, resilience, and the unwavering determination of a mother striving for her children’s well-being.
We’ve captured their voice so you can hear their story.
Is your family happy now?
Yes, we are happy now. We had a loan for a while. My husband worked as a labourer, but it was not enough. Now we are happy because after selling milk, we are able to pay off all the debts and take care of the children’s school expenses through that income. We are very happy now.
Why do you take loans from the shop?
We only buy cooking utensils, flour, sugar, and tea from the shop, but when we don’t have money, we take them on loan. Then we buy milk and use the income to pay off all the debts.
Do you join the women village savings groups in the village?
Yes, I do. Some sisters from the neighborhood came and asked me to join. Now we save a lot and take loans from the group. It brings comfort and peace of mind. I take loans to manage the children’s educational expenses.
(Palmera established a village bank in our community to develop financial literacy—a place where we could save and access loans to reduce our debt from predatory lenders).
What other livelihood have you started recently?
The Palmera team came and asked me to raise chickens. I am now raising some chickens. After they lay eggs, I will earn income from them.
What are your goals for the future?
I hope to save more through the village savings group, which will help my children in the future. I also hope the chickens will grow, produce eggs, and provide nutritious food for the children. I want to stand on my own two feet and support my husband as well.
The family of Senthooran Arudshivam has helped your family. What do you want to tell them?
I hope they help others as they have helped us. We are very grateful to him and his family for their support.
