When we met Nithiya, her home spoke quietly of struggle and endurance. She manages the household while her husband struggles to find steady work, and their son goes to school amid uncertainty. Since 2015, they have lived in a temporary house, never feeling the security of a permanent home. Daily life is a constant challenge, filled with worries about food, education, and shelter. Each day stretches endlessly as she balances chores, cares for her son, and navigates the hardships of survival, all while hoping for better days.

Despite the weight of these struggles, Nithiya’s determination shines through. She dreams of a stable home where her family can live without fear, and a future where her son can grow safely and learn freely. Every small effort she makes carries the weight of love and hope. With support, Nithiya could turn uncertainty into stability, providing dignity, opportunity, and a brighter, more secure future for her family. Her courage in the face of hardship is unwavering.

We’ve captured their voice so you can hear their story.

My name is Nidharsan Nithiya, and I live in Manikkapuram. We are a family of three. My son is studying, and my husband works as a daily wage laborer. However, his income is not sufficient to meet our household expenses and my son’s educational needs. We own half an acre of land, but there is no space or facility to start farming on it.

(Palmera established a village bank in our community to develop financial literacy—a place where we could save and access loans to reduce our debt from predatory lenders).

In our village, a saving group is functioning (by Palmera). I attend their meetings every week. They conduct training sessions and provide support for self-employment. I am also a member of the group and have been saving money through them. With a small loan from the group, I started raising chickens at home as a small business. I follow the training I received from the savings group and manage fruit and vegetable cultivation as well. The organization’s members visited my place and promised to provide more chickens and help build a shelter for them.

With the chickens I currently have, I plan to buy more and continue my self business. By selling the eggs, I aim to meet my household needs and my son’s educational expenses. I also wish to start another small business in the future.

The family that helped you, the Gayathri Krishnanthan family. Would you like to say something to them?

I would like to thank you and your family for supporting us from such a distance. Thank you very much.
