You Backed them and things began to change

Family Supported - Niranjani (Batticaloa)

“My husband left us after the baby was born and I had to keep her in this shed without a fan or electricity.”

Niranjini is 27 and lives in Sinnakalavattai in the East of Sri Lanka with her two daughters. Her oldest is six, and her youngest turns one tomorrow. Her husband left after a fight and hasn’t come back. He sometimes does wage work but doesn’t send money or help at home.

For the past two months, Niranjini has been staying at her mother’s house. Her mother helps with food and the children, and her sister sometimes brings meat or other food for them. Niranjini doesn’t work yet, but she plans to start working soon. She is also running around to make sure the debts they have are managed.

Right now, all they have is a small shed. Last year, when her youngest was born, she had to keep the baby there in extreme heat with no fan or electricity. The baby still gets sick during the day and sometimes at night. Even with all this, she keeps working hard to take care of her children and their needs.

She wants her children to go to school and learn like other kids. She doesn’t care what jobs they get later, she just wants them to be able to look after themselves. Her main goal is to build a simple two-room house so they have a safe place to stay. She is taking small steps toward that, making sure her children have food and care.
