Family Supported – Mohaneshwary (Killinochi)

When we met Moganeswary, it was clear how heavy life had become on her shoulders. Her husband struggles to work regularly, leaving her to manage every household expense alone. From ensuring there is enough food each day to making sure her son can continue his schooling, the weight of responsibility rests entirely on her. She also cares for her elderly mother, who depends on her for daily support. Each day is a battle, and small earnings vanish quickly into the necessities of survival.

Yet despite the constant struggles, Moganeswary’s determination shines. She dreams of starting a small business or finding a steady way to earn, knowing it could bring stability to her home. With additional income, she could provide for her son’s education, care for her mother, and bring a sense of security her family desperately needs. Her courage and unwavering hope are the quiet forces keeping her family going, even when life feels unbearably hard.

We’ve captured their voice so you can hear their story.

Do you feel that there have been any changes in your family recently?

We have got an opportunity to progress in women’s leadership. It has given us hope that we can achieve such progress within the last six months. Palmera has given us that livelihood, thinking that we should progress through that livelihood. Therefore, as a woman, we are trying to see how we can improve it further.

Do you have any changes in the livelihood of the dairy farming that was given to you?

We have got peace of mind through the dairy business that was given to us. Because we get milk from that cow. We get income once for 15 days through it. So we can meet the education expenses of our children and all our household expenses.

(Palmera established a village bank in our community to develop financial literacy—a place where we could save and access loans to reduce our debt from predatory lenders).

Have you joined the village savings group in your village?

We are part of that group. In that group, we are able to know how our women’s leadership is like. We are also taught about the progress of fruit and vegetable cultivation. We can talk about how we can earn income through them. We cannot think from home. But when we go to savings groups, many women join us and make efforts to improve ourselves.

What is your future goal?

Our goal is to increase our dairy farming and increase the income coming from it. Through this, we should improve the happiness in the house. This is our goal.
In our progress, we take milk. We like to make curd and buttermilk. We should sell them to show our progress in the local market, and we should benefit from it. This is our goal.

Gayathri Krishanthan and the family helped you to make your family happy. Do you want to tell them anything?

We thank you for providing dairy farming as a livelihood and improving us. Because even though we are a poor family, you have done us a favor so that we can improve from this. I thank you for assuring us that we will continue to receive income from it and that we will continue to make progress.
