You Backed them and things began to change

Latha lives in Batticaloa, in the East of Sri Lanka, with her two daughters. One is seven years old and already in school. The other is just nine months old.
Latha heads the household on her own. There’s no partner mentioned, and no one else bringing in money. Everything the family needs -food, school costs, day to day expenses- comes from her alone.
She does daily labour work to keep things going. That means going out each day to find work, getting paid when there is work, and managing when there isn’t. With a baby at home and a school-age child to look after, that’s a lot to hold together by herself.
Her seven-year-old is in school, and Latha makes sure that keeps happening. School costs money, even when income isn’t steady. She covers those costs the same way she covers everything else, through the work she does each day.
The nine-month-old is still very young and needs close care. Latha is managing both: a baby who needs her at home and the daily work she has to do to keep the family fed.
She’s the one who shows up, earns the money, feeds the family, and gets her daughter to school. That’s what her days look like right now, and she’s holding it together through her own effort.
What Latha wants more than anything is to keep her children steady -her older daughter in school and her baby well cared for- and to keep managing on her own terms.
