You Backed them and things began to change
“I just want my daughter to be healthy and go to school like other children.”
Kuventhini and her husband live in a small hut in a village in Sri Lanka’s East with their 15-year-old daughter. They have been in this house for 18 years, but they have not been able to build a proper home yet. Her husband does labor work, but it’s not every day, so most of the time they struggle to manage food and other basic needs.
Their daughter has been having stomach pain and migraines for the past three years. And the doctors haven’t been able to find out what’s wrong. Because of this, her studies are affected badly. The couple doesn’t have money to take her to a private hospital for better treatment.
Kuventhini says the hardest time was when her husband was bitten by a snake in the paddy field and had to stay in the hospital for a month. She had to take care of him while also finding money for the family’s expenses.
For now, they manage by getting credit at the shop for food and borrowing from relatives when needed. They thought of sending the husband abroad for work, but they couldn’t do that safely because they have no regular income and want to avoid falling further into debt.
Kuventhini wants enough to build their hut so that they have a complete home. She dreams of a time when her daughter is treated for her illness so that she can continue school properly. She is working towards a future where they live comfortably as a family.
