You Backed them and things began to change
At one point, both parents couldn’t go out to find work. There were a lot of days then, when they didn’t even have enough to feed their daughter.
Kanchana lives with her husband and their thirteen-year-old daughter in a small village in Sri Lanka. She cannot speak, and her younger sister also cannot speak. Kanchana stays at home and takes care of the house. Their daughter helps with chores and goes to school.
Her husband earns money by cutting and selling firewood. Sometimes he also goes to help at the cremation ground. His legs are swollen and he cannot walk upright, so the work is hard. The money he earns is never steady, and it’s not enough to cover everything. What they earn is not even enough for food. Some days they barely eat, and the daughter has to eat what she can at school.
They buy rice and groceries on credit when needed and pay back when money comes in. Kanchana keeps track of the house, fixes small things, and maintains the bicycle used for carrying firewood, so her husband can earn a little more.
In the past, it was harder. There were times with no food and no one in the house could work. Kanchana doesn’t want her daughter to go through times like that again.
Even with his illness, her husband tries to find work every day so that their daughter can stay in school. And Kanchana is determined to keep going without taking loans even when things are difficult. And she makes sure to pay back any credit. Kanchana also manages the money well so that her daughter is able to pay exam fees when she needs to. They keep going every day and working hard because they want to give their child a better future.
