You Backed them and things began to change
“Ten years ago everything changed. Now there’s no income, no support – nothing at all.”
Kamala lives in the East of Sri Lanka with her daughter and husband in a small home. There are three of them in the house, and Kamala is the one holding things together.
About 10 years ago, something changed for the household. A hand injury made it much harder for her husband to earn, and things haven’t been easy since. Before that, Kamala says things were going well. Since then, the family has had no steady income and no outside support to fall back on.
To keep food on the table, Kamala goes out to the fields and collects leaves from the Arun tree for selling. It’s what she does to make sure there’s something to eat. There’s no other income coming in.
What worries Kamala most is her daughter’s education. Right now there’s no money to support it, and she talks about that clearly and painfully. She doesn’t want her daughter’s schooling to fall away because of what the family is going through.
Kamala wants to find a way to keep her daughter in school and give her a real chance at a future. She hopes that the family will be able to live comfortably too. She dreams of a better time for all three of them.
