You Backed them and things began to change

Family Supported – Kaliyamma (Killinochi)

Vinoth Birabaharan
Donor

When we met Kaliyamma, her life was filled with quiet struggles. Her youngest child was sick and needed regular visits to the health clinic. Each trip meant more expenses — medicines, transport, and care — and she still had to find a way to feed and educate her other two children. Every month was a challenge to make ends meet, yet she never allowed her difficulties to stop her from being a loving and determined mother.

Kaliyamma often went without food so her children could eat. She sold whatever little she could to keep them in school and ensure her youngest received the medical attention he needed. Her days were long and tiring, but her heart remained strong.

She told us that her greatest wish was simple — to see her children healthy, educated, and free from the hardship she endured. Even through tears, there was hope in her eyes. Despite all she had faced, Kaliyamma believed that with a bit of help and hard work, her family could rise again. Her story is one of quiet strength and unshakable love.

We’ve captured their voice so you can hear their story.

How is your family situation now?

Palmera supported us dairy for our livelihood, and we are making progress now. We can cover our children’s education, tuition costs, and household expenses.

Have you joined your Palmera village savings group?

(Palmera established a village bank in our community to develop financial literacy—a place where we could save and access loans to reduce our debt from predatory lenders).

Yes, we joined the village group and are happy to be part of it. We take loans for urgent needs and repay them within three months. Before joining, we didn’t have the habit of saving, but now we do. Palmera helped us start a fruit and vegetable cultivation, and we have seen great progress with it.

What changes have taken place in your family now?

Earlier, we relied solely on my husband’s labor, but now, with the help of Palmera, we sell milk and earn additional income. Our earnings are sufficient, and I always have money on hand to meet household and school expenses. The children are very happy, and I am no longer entirely dependent on my husband. This has brought a positive change to our family.

What is your goal?

My goal is to expand my cattle business and increase milk production. I want to ensure continuous happiness for my family and achieve steady growth. My desire is to successfully expand my business within the next year.

The people who helped change your family’s situation are the Vinoth Birabaharan family from Australia.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to them for their invaluable support.
