When we met Jenthiny, she shared the painful reality of her life with quiet strength. She has been abandoned by her husband and is now solely responsible for raising her two young children. To survive, she works as a daily wage laborer, but work is irregular and not available every day. Because of this uncertainty, meeting even basic needs has become a constant struggle for the family.
Jenthiny and her children live in very difficult conditions. Their house is unsafe, and they do not have access to a proper well for clean drinking water. One of her children is suffering from malnutrition, which deeply worries her. Despite her efforts, Jenthiny finds it extremely hard to manage her child’s nutrition and health due to her limited income and lack of resources.
Each day, Jenthiny faces immense emotional and physical challenges as she tries to provide food, care, and protection for her children. Yet, she has not given up hope. With timely support, Jenthiny believes she can improve her living conditions, address her child’s health concerns, and build a stable and dignified future for her family.
Please note for many women sharing in written form is not easy. We sit with women to support them to share their story and have added context so you can weave together what you have made possible.
After Palmera came to our village, I have been earning the necessary income for my family through the support I received from Palmera. Through this, I have seen positive changes in my family. I can now afford to meet my children’s education, food needs, hospital expenses, and other critical needs.
I am now doing work from home sewing shoes and making mixture
Jenthiny previously was not engaged in earning a living income but today through continued mentorship and training she is able to engage in economically and this has allowed her income to increase and to meet her basic needs.
I have joined Palmera’s village savings group and I am saving a little bit of my income. Palmera taught me a lot. That is why my children and I are happy.
I also do fruit and vegetable cultivation. From there, I take vegetables, cook them at home, and give them to my children. I provide nutritious food to my children.
Palmera Savings group is a place for women to come together to learn financial literacy, save and use their collective savings to revolve loans for urgent needs and to improve their businesses. A key part of these groups is for women to share their personal challenges and their shared collective challenges as women and in these safe spaces, women have seen so much value. In addition to this, we focus on food security working through these groups to ensure each family understand how to produce diverse foods and have the technical capacities and the motivation to cultivate. In most of the homes when we arrive, they are not cultivating a home garden.
I thank the Senthuran Velnayagam family, who have helped our family. May they always be well, blessed, and healthy. On behalf of our family, I express my heartfelt gratitude.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
P. Jayanthi.
Our work continues with Jenthiny. She has begun the journey to stand by herself, but lasting change takes time. We will walk alongside her for one more year before letting go of her hand and it is this continued accompaniment that makes all the difference. This is possible because of you. Thank you.
