Family Supported – JeJarany (Killinochi)

Gayathri Krishanthan
Donor

When we met JeJarany, the weight of responsibility hung heavily over her. She cares for her sick sister with unwavering dedication, taking her to the health clinic, making sure she receives the care she needs, and carefully stretching every small government payment to cover their daily needs. Work is scarce and inconsistent, yet JeJarany persists, knowing that without her support, her sister—also a widow—would struggle to survive.

Her home is modest, her days long, and yet in her eyes we saw quiet determination and resilience. Every task, every step, is driven by love and duty. She dreams of starting a home-based business, one that could provide a steady income, ease the burdens of daily survival, and give both of them a chance at stability. With this support, JeJarany and her sister could finally imagine a life where worry is replaced by hope, where basic needs are met, and where they can live with dignity and strength despite the hardships that have defined their lives for so long.

We’ve captured their voice so you can hear their story.

How are you doing now?

Now we are a little better. I am better now because of this dairy business. I have a son and a younger sister at home. My younger sister lives with me. I don’t have a husband. I used to go to the work every now and then. Now I am sick. I have severe cough and sore throat. That’s why I can’t go to the work. Because of this dairy business, my life is going well now. I get money every 15 days. That’s why my life is well, nothing else.

At first, the shopkeepers refused to give me a loan. Now that I have this dairy business, they’re giving me a loan. So, I don’t have a problem.

(Palmera established a village bank in our community to develop financial literacy—a place where we could save and access loans to reduce our debt from predatory lenders).

Have you joined the village saving group?

Yes, I have joined. There’s no issue now. Things are going well. Whenever my sister and I go to the hospital due to illness, they take care of the cow and look after us, telling us to take medicine and have good nutritious supplements.

Are you happy now?

Right now, we are happy because of this dairy business’s blessings. Our wish is to live well without depending on anyone. As long as we have this dairy business, things are going fine.

What is your goal? How do you wish to be in the future?

We wish to be well. With this dairy business, we don’t need to depend on others. We want to be well, grow this dairy business, and be even better, that is my only wish.

The family that helped you, the Gayathri Krishnanthan family, wishes you happiness. Would you like to say something to them?

Yes, I thank them for helping me. Because of them, we have come this far. We did not know them before, yet they have helped us more than our own siblings and relatives. They have supported us like children and siblings. I thank them and wish that their whole family remains well.
