Family Supported – Geetika (Anuradhapura)

Sulochana Bhaskaran
Donor

When we met Geetika, her home felt heavy with the quiet weight of years of struggle and resilience. She is a mother of two children, both studying at school, and every day she fights to ensure they have enough to eat and a place to grow safely. Geetika left her husband after enduring years of abuse, and since then, the burden of providing for her family has rested solely on her shoulders.

Many days, the income she manages to earn is barely enough to cover basic necessities. Food often runs short, and small daily challenges quickly become overwhelming. Yet, she refuses to surrender to despair. She works tirelessly, balancing household duties, her children’s needs, and the constant worry of how tomorrow will come. Her greatest hope is that her children will continue their education and build a life free from the struggles she faces.

In her eyes, one can see the weight of hardship, the deep ache of responsibility, and yet, beneath it all, a resilient spark of hope. Despite every obstacle, she continues forward, determined to keep her family safe, nourished, and dreaming of a better future, one day at a time.

We’ve captured their voice so you can hear their story.

My name is Geetika Dhamayanthi, and I am 43 years old. My husband left me five years ago, and since then, I have been raising my two children alone. My youngest child is 17 years old, and my oldest son is 26. Ever since he left, I did labor work to make a living. It was a hardship for me. Now I do farming to provide food and an education for my children.

While I was in hardship, joining Rajarata Praja Kendraya (Local Organization) became a turning point. Through them, I started receiving support from the Palmera project. When I was struggling to make ends meet, they provided me with food rations for my family. They also helped with school transportation for my youngest son, which eased some of my burdens.

Additionally, they (Palmera) supported me in starting poultry farming, which has been a great help in improving my economic status. Their(Palmera) guidance and assistance have been invaluable during difficult times.

In the future, I want to expand my poultry farming and improve my cultivation to earn a better income. On my own, I’ve managed to build two rooms for us to live in, but I still need to complete the living room and kitchen.

One of my biggest challenges right now is not having a toilet. I’ve been using my sister’s toilet, which is a bit of a walk from my house. Building a toilet is my main priority at the moment, and I hope to accomplish this soon. I also wish to expand my poultry farming and cultivation further.

I am so grateful to Palmera for helping me improve my financial situation. My heartfelt gratitude also goes to Ms. Sulochana for everything she has done for me. She has helped me in so many ways, and I truly appreciate her support for families like mine who are struggling. Thank you so much to all of you. I pray that Ms. Sulochana receives many blessings, and I thank her from the bottom of my heart for her help toward me and my children. Thank you so much for supporting families like us.
