You Backed them and things began to change

Family Supported - Disna (Badulla)

“Sometines we have to choose between the children going to school or if we can eat.”

Disna cooks all the meals and manages the household while caring for her daughter and ten-month-old son. So her husband is the only one who works. He farms paddy and sesame during the rainy season, then looks for casual labour when the dry season comes. He makes just enough for them all of them to survive.

Finding the money to live is hard. The family depends on whatever work is available, and there is no steady income to rely on. Disna’s mother helps when she can. But she can’t always be there, because of her own issues and struggles.

Their daughter is in Grade 1, and the family is determined to keep her in school. Even when food is scarce, they reduce what they eat to cover her education costs. “Even if it means we have to cut back on things, we want to make sure we educate her,”

Disna says. It’s important to her that the children stay in school. She wants to make sure they are doing everything they can to give them a chance at a better life.

Right now, they don’t have a proper home. And trying to build a house has been difficult. There was a time when the family had nowhere to live. But now they have a temporary shelter. They still can’t afford to build a home of their own. But they are determined to get there.

She cooks three meals, cares for her young children, manages the household and helps the family make difficult choices about food and education. What she wants is a life where they are not always struggling to eat or to send the kids to school.

Your support over the next two years can help them have financial security through a livelihood of their own. Something that they can work hard at, to become economically stabile.
