Family Supported – Dayalini (Killinochi)

Sanjayan Arulsakaran
Donor

When we met Dayalini, her face carried the quiet worry of a mother who does not know how she will feed her children tomorrow. She has three little ones who depend on her, and every day is a struggle to meet both their food and their education needs.

Her husband works on other people’s fields, helping landowners during harvests, but the work is never steady. Some weeks there is a little income, other weeks there is none at all. To survive, they are often forced to borrow, but each loan only deepens the burden of debt, pulling them further into a cycle they cannot escape.

What hurts her most is watching her children suffer — going to school hungry or missing classes because the family cannot cover their costs. Dayalini dreams of breaking free from this hardship, of giving her children a chance at a future brighter than her own. Yet right now, survival itself feels like a daily mountain to climb. Behind her tired eyes lies both exhaustion and a plea for help.

We’ve captured their voice so you can hear their story.

Do you think there has been any change in your family situation?

There has definitely been a change in our family situation. Previously, my husband worked as a wage laborer, and we struggled to meet our living expenses and our children’s education needs. Now, our livelihood has improved, and we can manage our household expenses. We were once living in extreme poverty, but through activities like fruit and vegetable cultivation, raising chickens, and goat farming, It’s big help for us. Because of Palmera team encouraged us to do this business (goat farming and etc.)  We are now in a much better place.

Do you think there have been any changes or improvements in your family due to the livelihood provided to you by Palmera? Can you tell us a little about it?”

We have received income from livelihood provided by Palmera. We are doing fruit and vegetable cultivation. We use vegetables for our food needs. We also sell them in the market. We also get money from the dairy business. We sell milk and get money once every 15 days. With that, we will pay the tuition fees for our children, and we can buy books as well. also raise chickens and get eggs from them, which we use for our food needs. We are in a very good situation now. These have become a good livelihood for us.

We are getting income from our businesses, and we are very confident and eager to buy more cows. So, we have made a lot of progress.

(Palmera established a village bank in our community to develop financial literacy—a place where we could save and access loans to reduce our debt from predatory lenders).

I have joined a women’s village group established by Palmera, which I wasn’t aware of before. Since joining, I have developed the habit of saving. The group offers financial support for urgent medical needs, providing significant relief. Being part of this group brings me joy and a sense of relaxation as I connect and share experiences with my fellow members
