When we met Aruluxsumi, her home felt weighed down by quiet struggle. She is a mother trying to hold her family together under immense challenges. Her husband works as a daily wage laborer, but finding consistent work is a daily battle. Aruluxsumi herself suffers from asthma and has lost sight in one eye, making even small tasks a challenge. Every chore, every meal, every step feels heavier than it should, yet she moves forward with unwavering care for her family.
Every day is a fight to meet basic needs — food, medical care, and education for their children. Despite these hardships, there is a determination in her eyes, a will to keep her family going no matter the cost. She shared how difficult it is to watch her children go without the essentials she wishes she could provide, yet she refuses to let despair take hold. Her sacrifices are constant, quiet acts of love and courage, often unnoticed by the world but deeply felt within the walls of her home.
Aruluxsumi’s hope is quiet but unwavering. With support for food, medical care, and education, she believes her family can find relief, stability, and the chance for her children to dream beyond their current struggles. Her story is one of resilience, courage, and the deep love of a mother striving against all odds, reminding us that even in hardship, hope can take root and grow.
We’ve captured their voice so you can hear their story.
What changes have come to the family?
I have been living with my husband and 5 children. Since these goats were given to me, I have been raising them full-time, and they have also given birth to young ones. In the future, I will sell the goats, use the income from that, and further develop my family.
Did you go to the village savings groups now?
Yes, I used to go to the village savings groups and save. From there, I took a small loan and bought chickens. I have also been raising chickens. We learn all the things we did not know from there. There are many things that we do not know, and they are good and useful. So, we say that we will progress further.
(Palmera established a village bank in our community to develop financial literacy—a place where we could save and access loans to reduce our debt from predatory lenders).
How is your livelihood now?
Since the livelihood support came and gave me goats, I am in a very happy situation now.
The person who helped you is Senthooran Arudshivam. What would you like to say to him?
I would like to thank his family. I am living in poverty, and through the village savings group, I received the goats. May his family be blessed, and may they progress for many more years. I have been raising the goats with my children at home. I do not want to waste this. I will remember it, raise these goats, and take care of the future of my daughters. For me, it is important to have an income, and I will save it and improve the future of my children.
