We are saddened to share that our dearly loved Ammamma, Gnanasacthy Ratnasabapathy – has passed away.
Ammamma was born in Jaffna in 1924 and was the second of three siblings and daughter to Pakayam and Thambiyah. Married to Ratnasabapathy in 1941 she is the proud mother to her three children, Navasakthy Ramachandran, Suthanthiraraj Ratnasabapathy and Shanthy Rajendran.
Ammamma’s father was a teacher in Jaffna and valued the importance of education. He built the Ghanesha Vidyalayam school that Ammamma attended and cultivated the importance of learning and empowering those less fortunate. He passed on these values to our Ammamma who has passed this legacy to her children and grandchildren.
After living in SriLanka for many years, Ammamma and Thatha moved to Australia in 1987. In Australia, Gnanasacthy became well known in the dance and music community and was affectionately known as ‘Ammamma’ by all the dance girls and musicians that she fed, advised and proactively supported over the years.
Ammamma always thought about others first, whether it is her family or the community in which she resided. In lieu of flowers, Ammamma’s wish would be to use the donations to support the community that she grew up in that is currently in need. Her chosen charity is Palmera.
Palmera is an Australian based, tax deductible, Australian Government Accredited agency. We work to support the most vulnerable and marginalised in Sri Lanka so no one is left out.
You will get updated on the impact of your donation in the coming months and receive a tax deductible receipt upon donation to the email you provided in your donation form.
