On July 6th, 2018 our lives were forever changed through the arrival of our daughter Kyla-Jay. Less than 18 months younger than her brother Elijah, she turned our already-blessed family into a complete one. Her outgoing, impulsive fearlessness captivated our hearts the moment we laid eyes on her, while her tenacity, compassion and curiosity are traits she shares with her brother.
As we reflect on how blessed we are to have Kyla-Jay in our lives, safe, healthy and happy, we are continually reminded of those who do not have what she has. And this is why we have chosen to dedicate Kyla-Jay’s 1st birthday to supporting the Graduating the Poor project.
This project identifies the 100 of the poorest in the selected area and works with them over 2 years to graduate them out of absolute poverty. The project is designed to address their immediate needs while also investing in their longer-term training, development and planning. It helps families secure the basic things like food and access to healthcare, but it also aims to build their financial resilience through savings.
This is our way of channeling some of the blessings Kyla-Jay has received, and been to us, to those who need it most.

This January 13th our first-born Keeran is turning 6! Time has flown by and he’ll be starting school next year. Over the years Amma (long time volunteer and now part time employee of Palmera) has explained to him what we do in Palmera to help people less fortunate than us. And people we could have easily been if we weren’t lucky enough to migrate to Australia.
So Keeran decided that this year he doesn’t want any presents, especially with his birthday being so close Christmas. After seeing how hard Amma works for Palmera he instead this year wants to donate money to one of our projects. He chose the farming for life project as it had a picture of a man in the display, lol.
The Farming For Life project will work with 30 farmers and their families to teach them new practices and technologies so they can increase their yields by up to 50-60% and eventually be able stand on their own two feet. Palmera’s approach is about providing a hand up not a hand out.

It’s been a wonderful year for us watching our little one grow into her own little person. We would love to celebrate her 1st Birthday with our nearest and dearest family and friends.
Advaitha is privileged to have been born into circumstances where all her needs and wants are met. Throughout the year we have been showered with so many toys, books and clothes for our little chunky chellamma, and most importantly so much love from all of you. We feel overwhelmed with gratitude for the support we have received.
Unfortunately, not all babies and kids are this lucky. We would like to invite all of you to join us in doing something about this. Instead of a birthday gift, we humbly request that you make a donation instead to Palmera’s Creating Leaders Project based in the North of Sri Lanka, recovering from the war.
The Creating Leaders Project
Having grown up in Sri Lanka, the education system is very much based on rote learning with the aim of getting kids to university. Only 2% do.
In the meantime, with the war, displacement, high unemployment, the growth in drug use, has not equipped students to transition from early childhood to youth, contributing to society.
The goal of this project is to train facilitators in the local village to create a youth group from years 8-14. The children and the youth will have an opportunity to learn about the environment, nutrition, human rights and leadership and discuss topics they feel are important.These opportunities are a natural part of life in Australia. This valuable project plants a similar seed in a village in Sri Lanka.Palmera’s Projects are all about resourcing up the local community with entrepreneurs to create livelihoods.

FOMO 1 was such a big success that we decided to do a sequel. FOMO 2 is our first production for 2017. With over 20 performers and 2 shows we are gearing up for a big month. FOMO 2 is a musical comedy about a boy who learns to use his imagination to lead over life’s greatest hurdles.
We at MAYA have made a long term commitment to Palmera. We are working with the Thervipuram village to help families re-establish themselves after the civil war. We believe in the philosophy “giving a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime”. So this is why we will be partnering with Palmera to achieve just that.

On January 23rd 2017 Elijah came into our world. We thought that we would have a lot to teach him, but what we weren’t expecting was that he’d be teaching us so much more.
Elijah finds joy in the most obscure things: wiggling fingers, a spinning top, a scrunched nose. Through that we’ve learnt to appreciate the little things that make up our life, trying hard to be present to the wonder in everything around us.
He wakes up every morning flapping his hands excited about life. It’s our favourite part of the day as we contest for the opportunity to pick him up so we can experience that moment with him. Through that we’ve been reminded that life is a great adventure, every morning another exciting opportunity to discover what is in store for us.
Most importantly, Elijah’s wants are nothing more than the basics – food, a safe place to sleep and the love of those around him. In return he gives us and the world all his energy and enthusiasm. In this we’ve come to see that in life we should only take the little we need and give all we have.
And so we would thought what better way to celebrate his first birthday by doing just that. What he needs, he already has, so what he can give is everything else.
This year, we’ve decided to invest the money that we would have spent on his first birthday celebration into the Palmera’s Pass The Gift project.
This is an amazing project that builds sustainable rural agricultural businesses for women in Sri Lanka’s North while strengthening communities through a values-based approach.
Many of you, our family and closest friends, have asked about celebrating Elijah’s first birthday with him. We ask this year that you celebrate with him by giving to this cause because you’ve already given him what he needs this year – your love.

This International Women’s Day on Thursday March 8th, we wanted to bring together Palmera Projects and Tamil Feasts – two organisations that continue to do great service for various communities with a key focus on financial sustainability, a cause close to our hearts.
We hope this special event will be a great meeting point for individuals with a keen interest in making a difference in the community and sharing an amazing Tamil meal or even just sparking up conversation that we hope will lead to actions in 2018.

We (Aseka and Randula) pledge to run a total of 150km together over the next 29 days!
We are doing this to fundraise and spread much needed awareness for the Palmera Projects, and their Banking on Change for Good program supporting women in Theravil, Sri Lanka.
Palmera Projects provide business solutions for rural entrepreneurs of Sri Lanka, thus creating environments where families can stand on their own two feet.
Theravil (Northen Province) has long seen the cruelties of the civil war and are still recovering from the trauma of it all. Rooting from traditional values and gender norms, women are not given much opportunity to participate in economic affairs. Like many women in rural Sri Lanka, women in Theravil lack financial independence and literacy.
The Banking on Change for Good program will support 400 women develop financial literacy, independence and leadership skills through the establishment of Theravil’s first ever women’s bank.
We have chosen to do this run over 29 days to celebrate Aseka’s 29th birthday! We are hoping to raise $1000 through the generosity and kindness of our community.
Through this fundraiser, we hope to shed light on the northern rural communities’ constant struggle to be included in the country’s growth and raise awareness of the importance of the inclusive campaigns of Palmera Projects.

We, the Tamil Womens’ Organisation (TWO), are a small group of women who put aside our busy schedules to raise funds for organisations providing much needed support in the North and East of Srilanka. For our second event this year we are delighted to support Palmera’s Women’s Banking Network project.
This project will work with 110 women to help connect them to mainstream financial services. This will allow women to save and access loans to meet their needs and those of their families. Individually, it provides an avenue for women to engage with financial activity and strengthens their financial literacy skills. For as little as $56 per lady per year the project can be achieved. We think this is such a great initiative and are thrilled to be supporting it.
About 15 years ago TWO held a Bollywood night to support tsunami victims and it was a sold out event and we’ve had similar interest for this year too. Our first Bollywood event involved great food, dancing and company and this year’s event did the same.
TWO members are very pleased to share that our event was a great success. A fantastic night was had by all including Bollywood dance performances and even a dance lesson for all guests in the famous, Lunghi Dance!
Most of all we are pleased to announce that we were able to raise $10,000 for Palmera which was then matched by one of our guests, who was inspired by Palmera’s work on the night! Local business owners of Centex Homes allowed our donations to reach $10,000 for this project!

On February 10th 2019, we achieved our goal: we managed to raise over $35,000 and cover the cost of Palmera working with the village of Colony for a whole year.
Let me rewind a little.
In 2019, we ran Race to Raise for the third year running. We raced through Sydney’s Central Business District to the finish line, and got sponsored to do this. We came up with this annual fundraising event to support a village in North-Eastern Sri Lanka called Colony. From the beginning, we were committed to supporting Colony for its full seven years with Palmera. Each year over the last three years, we have grown and grown. And this year, we managed to raise enough to support Colony for all of 2019.
But we didn’t do this on our own. Far from it. We were running on behalf of our 701 supporters as well as all of the villagers living in Colony.
We are overawed. We are grateful. We are beyond inspired by your generosity. Over seven hundred people believed in us; believed in Palmera; and believed in the ability of Colony’s villagers to make the most of our hand up. The villagers are made up of farmers who are dedicated to improving the quality of their cattle, women who have escaped physical and sexual violence to lead their community, and children who offer the hope of moving from a grim past to a bright future.

It’s the middle of Nov and we are just a week out from our London Handmade launch and we’re all a bit jittery and it’s not because winter is coming! Our small but effective team of volunteers has been working hard to get the word out about Handmade to our family, friends and colleagues. Will they come on the Handmade journey…? Will they connect with the strong women in the book..? And will they share it all with THEIR loved ones…? We hope so!
Handmade has a special place in my heart because I was lucky enough to be there when it all started back in Feb 2014. I still remember Abarna (Palmera’s Founder) sitting with me before my volunteer trip to Sri Lanka, describing her vision of sharing the stories of the war affected women in Sri Lanka through an everyday relatable medium like cooking. She didn’t know how it would look or how long it would take to bring this to fruition, but I could see her passion in wanting to share their stories with the world and I wanted to play my part whichever way I could.
My stay in Sri Lanka spanned two months and in that time I worked with Palmera’s partner to organise a number of interviews, document many recipes and even took a few photos along the way. Though I didn’t understand the local language, I was able to feel the hardship they had gone through, by the pain in their eyes. I learnt a lot about Sri Lanka and its people on that trip and will always be near & dear to me.
Fast forward 2.5 years, I had left Sydney and moved to London with my wife, when I got a call from Abarna saying that the book was ready for launch in London! I received an early copy of the book and couldn’t put it down! It was humbling to read the trials and tribulations of the war affected women as they struggled to feed their families. But it also left with a message of hope that there is a brighter future, one where they can once again celebrate their culture through food but also something as simple as making their children’s favourite meals on their birthday.
With all this in mind, our volunteers have spent countless hours organising the venue and catering, arranging speakers and of course spreading the word far and wide about the upcoming launch! The Handmade launch will be on Wed 25th Nov. It starts at 630pm at The Walrus & The Carpenter, 45 Monument Street, London EC3R 8BU. You will not only get to taste some of the dishes from Handmade but also get to hear the journey of the cookbook from a few of the interviewers and photographers who were on the ground, and the designers of the book who brought it to life! Hope to see you on the night!

When Vibee’s father told us that he wanted to give us a gift to celebrate our recent wedding, we were very touched.
We were already so lucky to be surrounded by family and friends on the day, and fortunate to live in a safe and prosperous country. We have all we need. So when the three of us sat down to talk about how we might mark the occasion, we immediately thought of Palmera.
We’ve had links with Palmera since its early days, and love that it makes such a meaningful difference to the lives of people in Sri Lanka, a country that means so much to us. The challenges people there face on a daily basis are nothing short of heartbreaking.
By supporting Palmera and creating opportunities for people who need a hand up, we know that we are making someone’s life a bit better. We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate our love than by sharing it far and wide. We hope that you might consider doing the same.

This project will help small-scale farmers build successful business farms in the village of Kanthansamy Nagar. In this village, building a thriving farm costs as little as $349 per farmer; this is only $78 a year over the 5-year programme. Each of the 105 farmer will learn how to compete within the farming marketplace and the skills they learn will help them break down barriers that keep them excluded.

We were so excited when we came up with the idea for Dine It Forward, we knew it was going to be a fun campaign to run as the majority of the team are foodies. We are looking forward to all the food ‘research’ we can do!
The way the campaign works is that we want people to host a meal for their friends and ask them to contribute an amount to Palmera for the meal. The name Dine it Forward came from the term Pay it Forward. It is all about doing something good to another when someone does something good for you. In this case, when you have hosted a friend or a family member, rather than them inviting you to do the same, they host someone else. Each time, as a thank you, money is raised for those who need it most.
One night after a big ‘research meal’ the team were brain storming how we could make it easier for people to host their own meals and we came up with the brilliant idea of a little ‘pack’ we could send them. The packs includes some recipe cards of Sri Lankan meals, spices they could use to cook the recipes and a CD they could show their guests on Palmera and where the money they donated would be going.
To kick off the campaign we are hosting three events ourselves for the general public. The three events will take place at City Hotel in Sydney where we will serve a full three course Sri Lankan meal. We will also have two chefs Paul Van Ryek and Manuja Fernano cater these meals and also speak to us about Sri Lankan food.
We had another brilliant idea to give all the guests who attend our events a pack to inspire them to host their own events. In these packs we also included some homemade Sri Lankans sweets. The packs where a great idea but we had plenty a late night putting them together and a few cooking fails trying to perfect the Sri Lankan sweets. All up we had to make more than 200 packs!! Not too sure if everyone in the team still thinks it’s a brilliant idea.
We thought it would also be fun to have some food inspired games on the night, so we organised a ‘guess the spice’ game where you guessed it, guests had to guess which ground spice was which.
We also asked the chefs to do some interactive lessons on how to make some simple entrees.
We are very excited to be launching this campaign, we have already sold out of tickets for all three of our launch events and hope that all our long nights organizing will pay off!

We are Eastern Empire, Sydney’s finest ensemble of South Asian artists. Since 2011, we have been sharing our inimitable interpretation of Indian music with the world.

Our latest show is a particularly special one: it is our tribute to Mani Ratnam, an Indian filmmaker who is an idol of Tamil and Hindu cinema. He is credited with revolutionising Tamil-language film, and has collaborated with some incredible composers, including Illaiyaraaja and AR Rahman.
We have been inspired by Mani Ratnam’s musical journey, and our shows explores the sound behind his films, from his early beginnings as a filmmaker to his more recent hits. We are so excited to be sharing this very personal show with you.
We’ve been a supporter of Palmera since its early days. Aside from being a good cause, it has always been important for us to find a way to give back. It’s the right thing to do, and we want to grow while we serve those in need.
That’s why we’re delighted to partner with Palmera for this show, and to be putting part of ticket sales towards improving the lives of women in Sri Lanka’s North. Specifically, we’ll be donating to Palmera’s Women’s Banking Network, which is designed to start and maintain a women’s banking network in Kanthansamy Nagar. In order to do this, the project needs to raise $41,913.
This works out a $279 per women; only $56 a year over the 5-year programme to work with women to better manage their livelihoods, build financial literacy and strengthen savings practices.
We’ll be playing at the Bryan Brown Theatre in Bankstown. We have two shows on Saturday 29 June: a matinee at 5.30pm and a finale at 8.30pm. More information and tickets are available via our event organiser, iBazaar.

Palmera Projects used to host an awesome yearly event in the past called ‘Human Race’. It was an Amazing Race style event where teams solved clues and challenges while racing around Sydney.
We at Maya used this as our inspiration to come up with our own event ‘Race to Raise’. We teamed up with UTS Tamil Society to host the event.
MAYA have made a long term commitment to Palmera. We are working with the Thervipuram village to help families re-establish themselves after the civil war. We believe in the philosophy “giving a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime”. So this is why we will be partnering with Palmera to achieve just that.
For the ‘Race to Raise’, teams of 4 are going to race around Sydney CBD collecting clues, solving puzzles and completing challenges to help rewrite the stories of one village.
This is the first year we have organised a ‘Race to Raise’. We are nervous and excited about how the day is going to go and we are working very hard to make sure it’s a success.

You are a woman in rural Sri Lanka. Having endured civil war, you are now responsible for providing for your family, often unsupported. You and your children face the all too real risk of poverty, violence and isolation.
Many of these women are trapped in a cruel cycle. In order to make impossible ends meet, they are often forced to endure physical and sexual abuse or fall victim to human trafficking.
And on top of it all, they face this alone.
BUT THERE’S AN OPPORTUNITY…
An opportunity to rewrite their story.
A chance to give their children a new future.
A door opened by you.
Palmera Projects are an incredible not-for-profit organisation that has stepped into the lives of these women in need, establishing projects that build sustainable livelihoods.
Palmera connects vulnerable women to technologies and infrastructure to produce an independent income. With financial stability, these women can build a safe home and environment for themselves and their families. Projects are structured to ensure that after 5 years of Palmera’s aid, these women, their families and their community are able to stand on their own feet- never requiring our assistance again.
The benefits of enabling financial independence extend beyond the obvious and including reducing domestic violence, child abuse, human trafficking and improving mental health outcomes.
The Race to Raise 2018 will be more specifically supporting the Women’s Village Bank in Colony. We decided on this project as building a savings habit and creating a safe way to save and a platform for loans enables women to build wealth and improve their resilience to shocks which would otherwise risk their family from falling back into poverty. It enables women to stand on their own two feet, make their own decisions and be in control of their financial circumstances.

On Sunday the 4th of February 2018, our team at MAYA Youth in Performing Arts are partnering with Palmera Projects to hold MAYA’s Annual Raise to Race. Teams of 4 will race through the streets of Sydney’s CBD collecting clues, solving puzzles and completing challenges. Last year it was a blast, and this year it’s going to be even bigger and better.
We need you to join us and become an advocate for Palmera and help raise money for Women’s Village Bank. On September 29th, I’ll be doing my first Triathlon in Singapore. As of June, I could only swim 20 metres. This Triathlon will require a 1,500m open water swim, 40km bike and 10km run, all in the blazing hot Singapore sun.
The Raise:
I’m looking to raise $10,000 for the Women’s Banking Network project supporting 110 women over 5 years (who in turn support over 500 people). Teaching women financial literacy skills and giving them access to low interest emergency funds gives them a voice in the household and sets them on a path to independence and continual growth, breaking the cycle of aid. Helping women with finance initiatives is one of the most effective ways to lift families out of poverty.
The Ask:
Give what you can. Bet with me, against me, or laugh at me. It’s all for a good cause.
I’m aiming for less than 4hrs with a stretch goal of less than 3hrs 30mins.
Sorbs sadly passed in July. But anyone who knew him, knew he was the #1 supporter of anything people put themselves into – business, investments, fitness, or charity. “Good work, keep it up” was his motto.

After the enormous success of our inaugural Team Palmera Projects in the 2014 City2Surf, we’re back again and ready to run!
Our first team of 11 runners raised over $1100 last year to fund a sanitation project to build much needed toilet facilities for a number of families.
This year we’d love to grow our team and invite all friends of Palmera join our team and run for a cause. Every dollar raised will help us break the dependency of aid and empower families in Sri Lanka to take control of their own livelihoods.
On the 9th of August, you can put the FUN in fundraising by joining Australia’s largest community marathon, make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate and achieve a new fitness goal!
Just like every charity team, you will receive a Palmera T-shirt to wear on the run this year and will see our entire team waiting to cheer you on as you cross the finish line. We are running an event on the afternoon of Saturday June 3rd with a group of Sri Lankan women to inspire each other to connect together and share their experiences with food, understanding and good will. We wanted to share a few projects to kick-start the inspiration and what better project to focus on that than with the Handmade book by Palmera.
This book is more than a cook book or a coffee table book. It tells the stories of the women of the North of Sri Lanka, their resilience and determination to move forward despite their past struggles – its great that the proceeds of the book is being given to the women to enable them to be self-sufficient through their micro-business schemes.
On a personal level, I‘m attracted and attached to this book as akin to an ‘heirloom’, it memorialises wonderfully the ‘home’ recipes of our heritage and reminds me of the delights made by my grandmother in days gone by – it is a book to share with the next generation too!”

Hi everyone!
We (Maiurei and Nila) have decided to raise money for Palmera’s Graduating the Poor project by taking 1 million steps each over the next 2 months. We have been long term supporters of Palmera all the way from London and have been helping with the Handmade cookbook distribution here.
Palmera is an organisation that has various projects set out to support those who have been affected by poverty in Sri Lanka due to the civil war. The ‘Graduating the Poor’ project aims to identify 120 of the poorest in the Kandavalli district of Killinochi, and work with them over 2 years to help them out of poverty. They ensure families have access to food and healthcare whilst also helping them build their financial resilience.
We are hoping to raise at least £750 through your generosity and compassion!!! We would like to thank you in advance for your support and will update you with our progress through our posts on our Instagram.

We at EmpowerMEnt have always been big supporters of Palmera and have a very close relationship with the team. So when we decided to hold our Charity Ball we really wanted to use this as a platform to help promote Palmera, an organisation so close to our hearts.
EmpowerMEnt is a Melbourne based Charity with a mission to build awareness on currency social justice matters, and more specifically, with organisations that aid innocent civilians that have faced the negative repercussions of war and terror.
We believe Palmera aligned perfectly with our mission as they do a great job in aiding civilians in Sri Lanka to help rebuild a sustainable life post-war through their various projects.

This year, Ammas and Kutties (a Tamil mothers group in Sydney) will be holding our inaugural event, Kooththu, a children’s fair. Our purpose is to foster a strong sense of identity and social responsibility amongst children of second generation Tamil mothers (and their families!). All proceeds will go to Palmera and we’d love this event to kick start the next generation of philanthropists in our community!

We love the work Palmera does to support women just like us. We know it’s just by some twist of fate that we’ve ended up in such a privileged situation and feel it’s our duty to something to support those less fortunate than us, and be great role models for our kids (kutties!) too.
All funds raised will be donated to the Creating Leaders project, we chose this project as its a children’s based project and being amma’s this project spoke to us. The project will provide critical life and employment skills for youth transitioning from school to employment.

We have been thinking about doing something special to celebrate our union and the union of our families.
We decided instead of having favours at our wedding for our guests we would do something they would remember and something that would make a difference to others, we would donate money on our guests behalf to Palmera.
I’ve always been a big fan of Palmera and the cause since 2009, when I did the Human Race. It was heaps of fun and such a clever idea to raise money! So whenever charities come to mind, the first I think of is Palmera. I am also a big advocate for humanitarian issues, and knowing how it has affected families around us, I want to make a change.
We chose the Milking It to Change Lives project because we believe in animal welfare, and agriculture is a very sensitive issue to deal with in regards to animals. The animals deserve to be treated with respect – something that isn’t done very well at all, especially in first-world countries. The fresh start the farmers of the North have is a great opportunity to educate the farmers to ensure that the animals and humans can work together and provide for each other, rather than one hurting the other to get what they want.
We hope our drop in the ocean inspires others to donate further. Together we can all make a more significant change.

Did you know 60 million primary aged children are not in school. This fact shocked but also motivated me to support Palmera. We at Indian Dance School teach dance to so many young children and can’t imagine a life where they aren’t able to go to school.
The Indian Dance School is all about building a dance community and developing dance confidence and skills. Every year we organize a concert to showcase our dancers and what they’ve learnt over the year. This is one of the most exciting times of the year for IDS. This year we chose Palmera to give our proceeds to from the concert. As a women I love that Palmera support vulnerable women in the community and help them be independent, I also love that they support young children to live life and be care free.
We have been long-term supporters of Palmera and would love to help them create a world where no one is left out.

Gana and I are getting married this November. We are so thrilled and excited for our big day.
Earlier this year Gana and I did one of the most amazing things together, we went on the Palmera Village Experience trip to Sri Lanka. This journey gave us both a chance to give back to the Sri Lankan communities that have suffered from the 30 year long civil war in a meaningful way. We learnt a lot about what Palmera does, how it helps these communities and how much it really makes a difference to people’s livelihoods. It made us want to give back more!
We wanted Palmera to be part of our big day in some way. So we decided that instead of favours we would instead donate the money to Palmera in the name each of our guests. We wanted in particular to support the Connecting to markets project.
This project will help build thriving business farms in the village of Kanthansamy Nagar. In this village building a thriving farm costs as little as $349 per farmer; which is only $78 a year over the 5-year programme. Each of the 105 farmer will learn how to compete and be successful within the farming marketplace and the skills they learn will help them break down barriers that keep them excluded. We think that’s money well spent!
We can’t wait to see what our guests think about our idea. We hope they love and appreciate it. We think it’s an amazing way to kick off our married life together!

That’s me on the left (Abhi) and my mate Chiranth on the right.
This walk has been 4 years in the making! On October 5th my good mate Chiranth and I (Abhi) will be walking 100Kms in 24hours from Narrabeen Lakes in the north to Bronte Beach in the south. Why? Because we’re both pretty silly! You’d have to be to put your body through something like this.
We could have done something else that weekend… gone to the beach, watched a movie or binge watched the new season of Stranger Things but instead we’re gonna be slogging it out in the day (and night) trying to reach Bronte Beach by 1pm the next day.
Oh and if the walk wasn’t challenging enough, along the way, we’re gonna be doing even sillier challenges like sit ups at 50km, sculling a beer at 70km and whatever else you guys get us to do! See I told you we were bonkers!
We started training for this Silly Walk (#sillywalk2019) a few months back and with under 2 months to go, would love for you to join us on the business end of things as we head towards the big day on 5th October!
Ok now for the serious bit – This walk has been 4 years in the making because 4 years ago my late brother Dhananjay (DJ) conquered this same 100km walk in 24hours. He did it for many reasons but one of them was to get his mental and physical health back in order. You can see videos of him on this pursuit on our insta page (sillywalksydney). He smashed the 100kms alright and conquered many of his demons along the way too! Oh and he also raised a ton of money for this wonderful charity Palmera.
Sadly, 3 months after completing his walk, he passed away and shuffled off this mortal coil. He left behind wonderful memories for family and friends that will last us a lifetime.
One of our last few conversations before he left us, was his wish to get our family & friends out walking regularly, as he had found it therapeutic in working through his issues and he wished for others to do likewise.
I thought I’d put his advice into practice and give this walking thing a go! It’s not bad at all I tell ya!
So in this grand plan to make this 100Km walk a thing, my good mate Chiranth jumped at the chance to shoot the breeze with me for hours on end! I’m sure he’s gonna regret saying “yes” by the end of this thing. So here we are. Chiranth & I are doing a 100Km walk in 24 hours, in memory of my inspiring brother DJ, trying to get ourselves fit, and trying to raise as much money as we can for the great work that Palmera does with women in Sri Lanka, so that they have the choice, freedom and dignity in how they live their lives! This run will support the Connecting to Markets project.
This project will help build thriving business farms for 105 farmers, the farms will cost as little as $349 per farmer; which is only $78 a year over the 5-year programme. Each of the 105 farmer will learn how to compete and be successful within the farming marketplace and the skills they learn will help them break down barriers that keep them excluded from markets.

Our little ZiZi baby is turning one and we wanted to celebrate her birthday by supporting a cause through Palmera. Zia is privileged to have received lots of clothes, books and toys over the last year and most importantly lots of love from all of you. We would really like to take this opportunity to help make a positive impact in someone else’s life who needs it more by supporting the Graduating the Poor project.
About Palmera:
Palmera is a not-for-profit organisation that focuses mainly on helping people in Sri Lanka who have been displaced due to the civil war. They help provide resources to those less fortunate which in turn enable them to be self-sufficient and financially independent.
About Graduating the Poor
There are women and men who live in absolute poverty in Northern Sri Lanka. The project is designed to address their immediate needs while also investing in their longer-term training, development and planning. It helps families secure the basic things like food and access to healthcare, but it also aims to build their financial resilience through savings. It also makes sure that these families are integrated in their community. At the moment, they are often very isolated, which just makes their situation even more dire.
With our help, families can find a better way to make a reliable income, therefore positively impacting current and future generations.

Thank you deeply for joining me and my family in celebrating my first birthday. In case you couldn’t tell already, I love Moana! She is an island girl just like me! Aside from loving Moana for being so darn cute, I admire her for choosing to uphold the greater good above self-interest. She, luckily, was raised without culturally imposed gender constraints and was encouraged and empowered to be a leader on her island. On her journey to save her island, she displays bravery, compassion, and resilience — traits that are key to being an effective leader.
Sri Lanka, by heritage, is my island. The people from my ancestral land are in the midst of rebuilding their lives after years of civil war, and I would love nothing more than to assist with this with all of your help. In place of a birthday gift, I’m kindly asking you to make a donation to the ‘Creating Leaders‘ project being implemented in Kandansamy Nagar by Palmera. ‘Creating Leaders’ is all about providing children and youth with critical life and employment-based skills to facilitate their transition from school into employment. I believe this project can empower the children and youth of Sri Lanka and help create some fabulous leaders who may one day help in the rebuilding process of their own village and possibly even become official village leaders just like Moana!

Our mahal (daughter) Yaalini யாழினி is turning one. She is blessed with two annahs (big brothers), family, and friends who love her and will support her grow into a strong Thamil woman. She wants for nothing. As we celebrate her first birthday we’d like to share her with women of North-East Sri Lanka who are raising strong Thamil women in difficult circumstances.

Our high tea will have over 20 Sri Lankan and Western items. The menu includes jalapeno rolls, pecan tarts, Malaysian tapioca cake, pan rolls, scones and many more. The fashion show, “The Unsewn Fabric’, will showcase the myriad of ways the unsewn fabric can crate limitless drapes.
At TEWO we really admire the great work Palmera does and how they help women in the North become independent and look after themselves and their families. We decided to donate the proceeds from our event to the Women’s Banking Network project.

The Indian Dance School is all about building a dance community and developing dance confidence and skills. Every year we organize a concert to showcase our dancers and what they’ve learnt over the year. This year is such an exciting year for us as its our 15thannual concert so we’re going all out!
As a strong woman in business I love that Palmera support vulnerable women in the community and help them be independent. I also love that Palmera is run by strong women that have similar community goals to mine.
