Bridging the Gap for Last-Mile Farmers in Periyakulam and Poonagery

Anitha’s Story: Struggling to Reach the Market
When we met Anitha, she owned two acres of land in Periyakulam. On paper, her land was an asset full of potential. But in reality, it was overgrown and unused. Each time Anitha tried to cultivate it, she faced losses. Without the resources to clear her land, buy quality seeds, or manage the risk of another failed harvest, her dream of farming felt impossible.

Instead, Anitha turned to labor work when it was available. But in her remote village, work was scarce—barely 10 days a month—and her income was just enough to scrape by. Like many in last-mile rural areas, she was cut off from opportunities to engage profitably in agricultural markets.

The Challenge: Profitable Markets, Out of Reach

Peanuts are a high-value crop in Sri Lanka, with profitable markets waiting for quality produce. But for farmers in remote villages like Periyakulam and Poonagery, the barriers are steep:

  • Middlemen take large margins, cutting into farmers’ profits.
  • Farmers lack access to resources like seeds, equipment, and water management tools.
  • Without knowledge of grading or pricing, they struggle to engage profitably with the market.

The system breaks down in last-mile areas, leaving farmers unable to connect with markets in ways that are sustainable or rewarding. These barriers keep families like Anitha’s stuck in poverty, despite their potential.

Lifting Farmers to Markets, Bringing Markets to Farmers

This is where we step in. Our program is designed to bridge the gap for last-mile farmers, helping them overcome barriers and unlock opportunities in profitable markets. We focus on a dual approach: lifting families to the market by building their capacity and bringing the market closer to them by addressing systemic challenges.

How We Empower Farmers Like Anitha

  1. Modern Farming Practices
Outdated techniques keep yields low. We train farmers in modern, sustainable methods to maximize productivity and reduce costs.
  2. Access to Quality Seeds
High-quality seeds are the foundation of a good harvest, but they’re often inaccessible to remote farmers. We connect them with reliable sources and train them to assess seed quality.
  3. Collective Strength for Better Prices
Farmers working alone are at the mercy of middlemen. We organize farmers into collectives, allowing them to negotiate better prices and access larger markets.
  4. Affordable Equipment
Rising labor costs make farming unsustainable for small-scale farmers. We provide tools and equipment to reduce costs and increase efficiency.
  5. Improving Water Management
Water scarcity is a persistent issue in last-mile areas. We teach farmers how to optimize water use, ensuring healthier crops and better yields.
  6. Market Linkages and Climate Resilience
By helping farmers adapt to changing weather patterns and connect with higher-value buyers, we create sustainable pathways to profitability.

Why This Matters

In Periyakulam and Poonagery, the barriers are higher, and the stakes are greater. Families here aren’t just trying to grow crops—they’re fighting to meet their basic needs. For them, connecting with profitable markets isn’t just an economic opportunity; it’s a lifeline to stability and independence.
