Back a House for Indumini

  • Anuradhapura

Indumini is nineteen years old and six months pregnant.

She and her husband live in a tin-sheet house where the water runs inside every time it rains. There’s no dry corner to wait it out in. That’s the home she’s about to bring a baby into.

To understand how she got here, you have to go back to where she grew up. Home was not a safe place for Indumini as a child. Her father drank heavily and the nights were unpredictable.

She left home at fifteen and has been making her own way since. She married her husband legally when she turned eighteen.

Her husband does daily labour and fishes when he can.

Indumini sells incense sticks and asks people for help on the days when money runs short. They’re doing what they can with what they have.

What a house means for Indumini right now is pretty straightforward.

Somewhere dry to bring up a child.

Somewhere that doesn’t leak.

Somewhere she can finally have a bit of steadiness after a childhood that didn’t give her much.

Together, we can make this a possibility for Indumini’s growing family. And bring them home to a house that is safe for her baby.
